The Dogtown Rhythm Band is a blues ensemble formed by Drake University professors David Lubbers and Tom Buckmiller. Specializing in post-war blues—a style that emerged after WWII in cities like Chicago, Detroit, and Memphis—they bring the electric sound, amplified edge, and driving backbeat that define this influential branch of rhythm and blues.
David Lubbers has built his Blues harmonica experience at festivals in Switzerland, Australia, and the iconic Hill Country Picnic in Mississippi, and is an Emmy-winning sports writer.
Dr. Tom Buckmiller was a 2022 Semi-finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN; was featured in the 2023 blues documentary To Memphis and Back; and has recorded five blues albums.
Together, Lubbers and Buckmiller combine their passion for authentic blues with ties to the Dogtown area delivering powerful performances rooted in tradition.
