Jason Walsmith:

"I spent the last 29 years playing in a rock’n’roll band called “The Nadas.” When Covid-19 hit, most of our gigs were canceled right away which inspired my wife and I to buy a camper van and travel, self contained, to play socially distanced outdoor shows across the US. It was a roll of the dice but man, it worked.

"In the last two years I’ve played hundreds of outdoor shows across 40 states, traveled over 100,000 miles in our camper van, written new songs and recorded a full length album at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I’m back on the road with my band nowadays but haven’t slowed down on the solo shows - and love to get to come play a show for you."

Our 2026 Graphic Artist: Becca Kaegi

Thu, 10 Sep 2026 04:55:42 GMT

Becca Kaegi:

Becca is a Stevens Point–based graphic designer and the creative behind One 10 Graphics LLC. Her work blends clean design with a hand‑touched, Wisconsin‑rooted warmth—shaped by years spent living everywhere from Milwaukee to Antigo before circling back home.

She also has deep Des Moines River roots. As a kid, she spent countless summers at Birdland Marine - the family‑owned marina that once stood where Captain Roy’s is today - skiing, pumping gas, eating cheese popcorn, and helping her aunt and cousins keep the marina humming. Later, while attending Iowa State, she lived with that same crew, adding even more river memories to the mix.

Becca loves creating branding and event art that feels welcoming, a little whimsical, and full of genuine connection. A proud UWSP grad, she and her husband have raised two daughters who keep her inspired and laughing.

Jack Randleman:

"I run a small design company called The House of Speed Supply & Design - tucked away on the East Side by the fairgrounds. My passion has always been storytelling - I want my art to tell a story - to evoke a feeling, to remind folks of easier days. My work is deeply rooted in vintage t-shirt and clothing inspiration, with years of working remotely in New York City as a t-shirt graphic artist.

"As a design studio, I do a lot of projects in the city and help manage Des Moines Vintage Bike Night , as well work on Coolest Bike In Town and a handful of other fun projects with the crew at Captain Roys .

"I also help host and promote motorcycle trips throughout the UP. A large majority of my passion in and out of design is in the history of motorcycle racing and riding. Hence how The House of Speed was born."

Thu, 31 Jul 2025 13:00:00 GMT

Map #7 • 907 Thompson Avenue
1:30 to 2:30pm

Jimmy Enos has coped with a debilitating stutter since the age of five. As a child, he found his love for music in his church’s Sunday School program, but was too self-conscious of his speech impediment to participate in its musical activities. His first opportunity to express himself musically was during a performance with his school choir at age 11. He describes the experience as a “spiritual awakening,” but his vulnerability left him traumatized. He would spend the next 17 years of his life battling drug and alcohol abuse.

Having overcome his addiction, he has learned to use music to express himself in ways that his words cannot. With a couple of EP's under his belt, a trend started for Stutterin' Jimmy to play with some of Iowa's finest musicians, such as Matt Woods and Joe and Vicki Price to name a few. Stutterin' Jimmy has opened for a few National Acts such as Rev. Payton and His Big Damn Band and Eric Tessmer .

In 2017, Stutterin' Jimmy and The Goosebumps played at 80/35 Music Festival.

Stutterin Jimmy and the Goosebumps are made up of Grady Stein on bass, Matt Cullen of the Sighs on guitar, Brian Parizek on drums and Jimmy Enos (Stutterin Jimmy) singer-songwriter.

1:00 to 2:00pm

Recently nominated for the Maverick award at the MCMO.

A purest at heart, and cut from the cloth of the troubadours and balladeers we all know and love, Luke Fox has been working hard through the years to carve out his own unique sound while passing down the line, songs of old and taking pride in shedding light on the new. With just his guitar, a voice filled with all the character you’d imagine an old crooning storyteller might have, a harmonica, and kick drum, Luke paints landscapes in vivid imagery where devils and angels roam and collide. Drawing from personal heartache and triumph, he’s been known to get the feet moving and the tears flowing. He’s a true original, powerful, yet visibly vulnerable with each performance. He cares deeply about music and it shows. Seeing him LIVE is the best way to really get to witness his unique brand of folk, country, rock, and Americana..

For fans of Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Ray LaMontagne, Uncle Lucius, Colter Wall, Zack Bryan, William Elliot Whitmore, Gregory Alan Isakov, Shakey Graves, the Avett Brothers and the Lumineers, you’re bound to appreciate what Luke’s been up to.

Map #20 • 1712 Pennsylvania Avenue

4:00 to 5:00pm

Cedar County Cobras play American Roots & Blues music from the last century. The music takes on an "old time" blues feel that would most likely be found in a juke-joint down a gravel road in rural Iowa.

Arriving with an upright bass, foot-drum, a mandolin, and a collection of guitars, this duo plays music that is best described as contagious, acoustic rockabilly swamp blues, or old-time country with the gritty sound of soulful blues!

Located in Iowa, Tom Spielbauer is the singer/songwriter for the duo and is known for his rich baritone vocals and playing slide guitar. His music partner, April Dirks , plays the boogie-blues on the upright bass.

The Cobras have played hundreds of shows across Iowa from the local brewery to large festival stages, winning the solo/duo category for the Iowa Blues Challenge and placing as semi-finalists at the 2025 International Blues Festival in Memphis.

"Creating art is, and always will be, a passion of mine"

I was a kid who grew up on the south side of Des Moines who loved to draw.

My biggest inspiration was my father, who would sit down with me at the kitchen table and we would draw the comics that were in The Des Moines Register.

It's crazy to think that one day I would create illustrations for that newspaper, and it would turn into a 30-year career.

During that time, my art appeared in a variety of newspapers and my freelance career would take off. I did illustrations for many magazines and ad agencies throughout the country.

My medium of choice has evolved over time. I began with drawing, pen and ink and painting.

Later, I would create with scratchboard and paper sculpture. Most of my art today is digital.

I've been awarded the National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Illustrator of the lear, top awards in the Dimensional Illustrators International, as well as the American Illustration Annual and the Society of Newspaper Design.

I have enjoyed illustrating childrens books, book covers and posters.

Last year I created the art for RAGBRAI'S 50th ride. That was the 8th time I would create their poster.

I continue to freelance and do personal work which has allowed me to connect with many people worldwide.

Creating art is, and always will be, a passion of mine.

4:00 to 5:00pm

16 albums in and Joshua Sinclair is just getting started. He continues to capture what life is like being a songwriter for the past 20 years, and all the highs and lows of life on the road.

After an unfortunate accident at a friend's bachelor party in 2015 which resulted in a broken knee; Josh's whole trajectory changed. Faced with not being able to walk for months, he took it as an opportunity to learn a new skill, live looping. Live looping is the recording & playback of a piece of music in real-time using a small foot pedal to capture and record song phrases on-the-fly. This became the backbone of his live show...using just a guitar, a microphone, and a loop pedal, he creates exciting & dynamic performances, a la "Keith Urban meets Ed Sheeran."

Sinclair also was the catalyst in starting up a music therapy program at a local hospital in 2018. Much like the national program, “Musicians On Call,” he wanted to bring that same kind of experience to patients to help make their hospital stay a little bit easier. The program has since expanded over the past 5 years to include other local musicians and offer more opportunities to help those in need.

"Since bursting on to the midwestern music scene with the band High and Lonesome in 1992, David Zollo has had a busy career. Along with constant touring, in the U.S and Europe, with High and Lonesome (1992-1998;) and his current band, The Body Electric (1998-present) Zollo has recorded 7 releases of his own material, including the most recent, For Hire . The current iteration of the band is his longest running, all four members playing together for a decade or more.

In addition, he founded and operated the seminal, Iowa-based, roots music label, Trailer Records (Bo Ramsey; Joe and Vicki Price; Greg Brown; The Pines; Brother Trucker; Kelly Parkeooper; Pieta Brown, as well as his own work, and that of others, from 1994-2006;) played keyboards and sang harmonies on many records by Nashville folk singer Todd Snider; fellow Iowan William Elliot Whitmore, and Greg Brown, amongst many other artists; and worked as a producer (The Pines; Brother Trucker; Kelly Pardekooper.) In 2017, he also formed a new band with Whitmore, guitarists Stephen Howard and Steve Doyle, and Body Electric drummer Brian Cooper, called Middle Western.

Despite the many things Zollo has done during his career, it is as a live performer that many feel he's at his best.

“Zollo…finds inspiration and creative freedom in the heartland of America. Clearly, he’s well served by it.” —Buzz McClain, The Washington Post

Dan Trilk carries on the hallowed tradition of great musical storytellers and has been compared to such artists as Willie Nelson, Randy Newman, and Jackson Brown. Dan started officially performing as a solo musician in 2009. Since then he’s released two full-length records, “Iowa Weather” and “The Antiparticle Man” and nine singles. His latest single ‘Lucky Like Me’ is scheduled for release on March 29th, 2024.

Trilk brings his talent as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, and his ease in almost any genre, to his new inspired releases. Through the songs, you experience a rich gravy of rootsy musical styles all evenly poured over the meat and potatoes of Trilk’s quirky, relatable lyrics and unique, savory songwriting. From the funky and hilarious “Gas Station Hot Dog” to the touching and intimate “Not A Bird” he is showing some new sides of his personality and writing that are only hinted at in his previous work.

Although his songs often detail his personal journey, the power of Trilk’s music lies in its ability to reach the listener through their own experiences. Map # 18 • 1701 Pennsylvania Avenue
2:00 to 3:00pm

"It’s Irish Music For the Iowish People!"

This is the motto of the Des Moines, Iowa based musical conglomerate known as The Crowfoot Rakes. The Crowfoot Rakes were formed way back towards the end of 2022, between a loosely defined group of five individual musicians, who wanted to strive towards the common goal of spreading their questionably cobbled together musical philosophy to anyone unfortunate enough to be within earshot. The band suffers from an eclectic palette of musical influences ranging from traditional Irish folk music, (colloquially known as "Trad,") to contemporary folk punk, to more well known artists such as Mark Knopfler and Tom Waits.

The Crowfoot Rakes are an energetic yet incredibly versatile band, with each member being a multi-instrumentalist. They play everything from guitar, mandolin, banjo, and fiddle, to lesser heard or known instruments such as accordion, bodhran, cittern, and Irish bouzouki, but the crown jewel of their instrumental heap would be the Uilleann pipes, or the Irish bellow bagpipes. The Crowfoot Rakes' very own Boy Wonder, Logan Barleen is one of only two uilleann pipers in the state of Iowa, and just one of a handful in the entire Midwest. The other featured members include Logan's full time father and part time madman, stringsmith Big Bob Barleen, the fiddlin’ wizard, Greg Valentine, slick whistling Brad Millison, and the six string beat thumping machine, Ryan O'Rien.

With a diverse range of musical backgrounds and styles, The Crowfoot Rakes bring a vast variety of sounds to the stage, suitable for any and every occasion.

Soulful ⋆ catchy ⋆ intimate ⋆ fun ⋆ lively

From officiallani.com :

Being born in Florida, raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and being a first-generation child of Colombian immigrants, Lani has never quite fit in with any particular group of people. Her home was in one place, with her roots in another. In a sea of reds with blood of blues, Lani’s identity glows purple. How do you explain color to someone who has never seen color before when you can barely understand the differences yourself?

Lani’s mission is to connect to multiple communities through her songwriting and her performances. With bits of her heart settled in a wide variety of genres (ranging from pop, Latin, rock, metal, EDM, jazz, and many more), she hopes to bring a little bit of everything to those who experience her live performances. She also hopes to create a discussion around the power of music as a healing power; and how authenticity through music is the key to connecting with others, healing emotional scars, and understanding oneself. Music heals, and Lani strives to connect to the communities around her through the experience of musical healing. She has now developed her own motto for her songwriting journey: ‘Music for the soul, from the soul’.

"A cacophany in hushed tones"

from littlevillagemag.com :

Songs of Violence distills Cacciatore’s knack for hooky melodies, fuzzed-out guitar riffage and moody melancholia in ways that contain traces of his inspirations without sounding derivative. It is probably no accident that some of his favorite acts, like Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo, are populated by record collectors whose music is more than the sum of its parts, something that is reflected in his group’s playful bio:

Good Morning Midnight began spontaneously, like a trip for ice cream or human

combustion, when a record store in Iowa became sentient and began immediately devouring

itself. The psychedelic folk music was gnashed to bits with every mouthful, the country records

ended up smeared in dissonance from a stack of 90’s rock albums someone set aside but never

bought, the expensive Brian Eno reissues tried to sneak out with the barrelhouse piano LPs

before they became their own snack.

Interview in dailynebraskan.com/culture/q-a-charlie-cacciatore-on-solo-project-good-morning-midnight

DN: How would you describe your music overall?

CC: I try to cover a lot of different territory. Shapeshifting is a keyword that I would not deny. There’s a writer that wrote a bio for me, and there’s a one-liner that’s “a cacophony in hushed tones,” and that really resonates with me. I’d say that my music is pretty dissonant, and I actively go for a lot of dissonance, but at the same time, it’s like a clean, dirty kind of thing. Like a dissonance with beauty kind of thing. The yin-yang to that. A totally different way to approach that question — me and my friends invented a term called I-80 emo because we all live along I-80, and we all play in each other’s bands.

"Working man's Americana"

From Reverb Nation :

Steeped in the rich tradition of Americana artists before him like Steve Earle, Johnny Cash and Dave Alvin, Randy Burk creates music that is at once exciting and familiar, honest and soulful, fearless and introspective.

Wrought with Midwestern sensibility and a blue-collar work ethic, Burk's affinity for songs about love, life and pain can be traced to his small-town Iowa roots. Born and raised in Atlantic, Iowa, Burk spent much of his youth singing in the church and listening to his father's collection of Elvis Presley 8 tracks.

After graduating from high school, Burk moved to Springfield, Missouri to work for his father's steel company as a laborer. For the next six years, he would frame steel buildings by day and build the foundation for his music career by night toiling in bars and roadhouses with country and rock bands. In between burning both ends of the candle, he would write songs and practice his guitar playing.

Though Burk was building a grassroots following in the Midwest, he knew he had more to give and more to learn. A chance meeting with Jimmy Tittle, Johnny Cash's son-in-law, who toured and recorded with Merle Haggard and The Man In Black would soon put him on the fast track. Tittle, an award-winning singer-songwriter, took the young Iowa native under his wing and encouraged him to follow his dreams and hone his talents as a songwriter and vocalist.

Your music in 5 words:

"Easy Listening, Jazz meets Folk and Country"

From patriciaholly.com :

Patricia is a Singer/Songwriter from Des Moines, Iowa. Her passion for singing was born from listening to her oldest sister writing original music, while her appreciation for Jazz and Big-band music came from listening to Frank Sinatra as a child with her father. Love of jazz continued into her teens being exposed to vintage 40's music while playing Fallout. She mixed in her midwestern country roots to create a style all her own.

Patricia wrote her first song at 16 years old, inspired by Taylor Swift's "Our Song". Over the years, she has refined the combination of her appreciation for the music that raised her to provide a truly unique, easy-listening experience for all that is fresh, unique, and timeless.
